On 8 December 2025 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs welcomed H.E. Mr. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the occasion of his official visit to Thailand.
Both sides had bilateral discussion where they exchanged views on ways to strengthen bilateral relations including through the Thailand - Africa Initiative, Thailand’s guiding framework for her foreign policy towards Africa. The discussion focused, in particular, on resuming the convening of political consultations, enhancing trade and investment, where the Thai side proposed promotion of Thai rice and agricultural machinery exports and opportunities for Thailand’s investment in gas exploration and production, and semiconductor in Nigeria. To foster development cooperation with shared interest, Minister Sihasak offered Thailand’s expertise in the agricultural sector. Possible cooperation, particularly in BRICS, of which both Thailand and Nigeria are partner countries was also discussed.
In addition, the Thai side sought Nigeria’s support in Thailand’s engagement with African regional and sub-regional organisations; namely, the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), of which Nigeria is a member. Meanwhile Minister Tuggar expressed Nigeria’s intention to enhance engagement between ECOWAS and ASEAN.
The official visit to Thailand by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria marked an important opportunity for Thailand to further strengthen relations not only with Nigeria, one of Thailand’s key trading partners in Africa, but also to advance the implementation of the Thailand - Africa Initiative in a structured, consistent, and sustainable manner with fellow Global South countries.
