Mrs. Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs led a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Thai private-sector on a visit to Accra, the Republic of Ghana between 13 – 20 June 2026. The purpose of the visit was to enhance bilateral cooperation between Thailand and Ghana as well as through the framework of the Thailand-Africa Initiative (TAI).
During the visit, the Director-General and the delegation met with representatives from the public and private sectors of Ghana. During the meeting with Ms. Genevieve Edna Apaloo, Director of the Asia-Pacific Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, both sides exchanged views on ways to strengthen bilateral relations. The Thai side underscored the importance of enhancing cooperation in the areas of politics, trade and investment, development cooperation, and strategic partnerships under the framework of the TAI. The two sides also discussed the possibility of establishing a bilateral Political Consultations mechanism.
The delegation also met with high level representatives of the Ghanaian Government and institutions of Ghana, such as Mr. John Dumelo, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture as well as high level representatives from the Ghana Tree Crop Development Authority, Ghana EXIM Bank, the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area and the Office of the President of Ghana. The Thai side sought to identify potential investment opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs in Ghana, particularly priority sectors of mutual interest, agribusiness agricultural technology and agro-processing.
furthermore, the Director-General together with His Excellency Thirapath Mongkolnavin, Ambassador-designate of Thailand to Ghana, whose jurisdiction covers the Republic of Ghana, co-hosted the Thailand-Ghana Business Networking event held at The Palms by Eagles Airport City Hotel. The event was attended by Mrs. Emelia Assiakwa, First Vice President of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who also delivered remarks. The event aimed to enhance business networking and partnerships between Thailand and Ghana. It also provided an opportunity for members of the Thai business delegation, comprising Thana Palm Products Co., Ltd., SCG International Coporation Co., Ltd., BYK Intertrade Co., Ltd., and the EXIM Bank Thailand, to engage in Ghanaian entrepreneurs. Approximately 100 participants attended the event.
During this trip, the delegation visited two Thai subsidiary companies in Ghana including the Thai Union Group Public Co., Ltd., one of the largest tuna processing and canned tuna production facilities for export in West Africa under brands such as StarKist and John West, as well as Indorama Ventures Packaging, a leading plastic bottle manufacturer in Ghana. The delegation also held discussions with the executives of both companies and exchanged views on their experiences and successful business operations in Ghana. The delegation also met with members of the Thai community in Ghana, whose strong sense of unity and active mutual support have contributed to a vibrant Thai community in the country.
The Republic of Ghana is endowed with abundant natural resources and serves as an important logistics and distribution hub for West African region, supported by strategic location and capabilities of the Port of Tema. The country is among the world’s leading producers of cocoa and gold and is considered a priority partner for Thailand under the TAI.
