On 21 October 2024, Ms. Huda Ali Shareef, Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Maldives to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Psusist Wongsurawat, Minister attached to the Department of South Asia, Middle East and Africa, on the occasion of her assumption of duty. The Minister congratulated the Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Maldives to Thailand on her new role.
The Minister spoke about the cordial relationship between Thailand and the Maldives, particularly in trade and tourism cooperation, reflecting the strong ties between the two countries. Both sides expressed readiness to strengthen relations, especially through high-level visits and ongoing negotiations on various agreements and memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Thailand and the Maldives. Additionally, the Charge d’Affaires a.i. expressed the interest in Thailand's expertise in medical and tourism industry.
Thailand and the Maldives established diplomatic relations on 21 June 1979, and have maintained good relations at both the governmental and people-to-people levels. Currently, the Republic of Maldives is a major exporter of high-quality fishery products, particularly tuna, which is the country's main export. Thailand mainly imports fishery products from the Maldives. Furthermore, the Maldives is an important investment destination for Thailand in hotel and resort businesses and is a receiving country of technical and development cooperation from Thailand.
