On 22 August 2023, H.E. Mr. Ashraf Khodjaev, Director of the Economic Diplomacy Directorate of Uzbekistan, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Worawoot Pongprapapant, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, on the occasion of his visit to Thailand to attend the High-Level Euro Asia Regional Review Meeting of Vienna Programme of Action for the LLDCs, between 22 - 24 August 2023.
During the discussion, the Director-General welcomed the resumption of Uzbekistan Airways’ direct flights between Bangkok and Tashkent which had been temporarily halted during the outbreak of COVID-19. Both sides also exchanged views on enhancing cooperation between the two countries in various fields such as trade and investment, technical cooperation, culture, and people-to-people contact. Furthermore, the Uzbek proposed to establish a collaborative partnership with Thailand in the realms of cultural tourism and the conservation of Uzbekistan's ancient Buddhist heritage sites, given both countries’ shared interest in Buddhist tourism.
Thailand and Uzbekistan have enjoyed close and cordial relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992, with both countries having celebrated the 30th anniversary last year. Uzbekistan stands as Thailand's second-largest trading partner in Central Asia, and has great potential to expand mutual trade and investment.
