On 8 July 2026, Mrs. Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand  held online discussions with Mr. Elhassan Mohamed Rabha, Director-General of the Department of Asia and Australia Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Libya.

 

The Thai side reaffirmed that Libya is one of Thailand’s key partners in Africa under the Thailand-Africa Initiative (TAI).  In this regard, the Thai side proposed further strengthening bilateral relations through the establishment of a political consultation mechanism, the organization of bilateral diplomatic training programs, the promotion of of high level exchanges and people-to-people contacts, as well as the expansion of development cooperation.


The Libyan side welcomed the TAI and the convening of this meeting as an important step in advancing bilateral relations, paving the way for closer cooperation between Thailand and Libya in the future. The Libyan side also expressed its commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation with Thailand and agreed to explore the possibility of negotiating an agreement on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports to facilitate official exchanges and high-level visits as proposed by the Thai side.

 

Both sides welcomed the upcoming 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Libya in 2027 and agreed to keep the momentum of cooperation moving forward.
