On 18 November 2024, H.E. Mrs. Edirisinghe Arachchilage Sriyani Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Ms. Sasirit Tangulrat, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs on the occasion of the assumption of her duty.

            The Director-General congratulated the Ambassador on presenting her Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua. Both sides highlighted the long-standing relationship between Thailand and Sri Lanka, particularly in Buddhist affairs, which reflects the strong bonds between the two countries that have been nurtured over time. Both sides expressed readiness to strengthen bilateral relations, especially in economic cooperation, after the signing of the Thailand - Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement, which was signed during the Thai Prime Minister's Official Visit to Sri Lanka in February 2024. Both sides also discussed possible joint  activities to commemorate the 70^th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Sri Lanka in 2025. Both sides aimed to strengthen political relations through bilateral and multilateral platforms

            Thailand and Sri Lanka officially established diplomatic relations on 20 November 1955. Over the decades, the cordial ties between the two countries have grown and strengthened. The foundation of friendship is rooted in the shared belief in Theravada Buddhism, a fundamental principle that has connected our nations for over 800 years.
