On 25 July 2025, Ms. Sasirit Tangulrat, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, and H.E. Ms. Morakot Janemathukorn, Ambassador of Thailand to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia with residence in Nairobi, the Republic of Kenya, had a bilateral meeting with Mr. Dewano Kedir, Director-General of the Asian and Oceania Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, during her visit to Ethiopia from 25 to 29 July 2025 in Addis Ababa. Also in attendance were representatives of the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and the Ministry of Public Health.
Both sides highlighted key aspects of bilateral relations between Thailand and Ethiopia, including the promotion of trade, investment, tourism and public health cooperation, particularly over 30 years of uninterrupted service by Ethiopian Airlines in Thailand and the growing popularity of Thailand as a destination for medical and wellness tourism among Ethiopian nationals seeking treatment and annual check-ups. They also discussed Thailand’s consideration for the re-opening of the Royal Thai Embassy in Addis Ababa and the shared interest in advancing cooperation in combating transnational crimes such as human trafficking and drug smuggling, given the strategic positions of both countries as transport hubs in their respective regions. The Ethiopian side expressed appreciation to the Thai authorities for facilitating the safe repatriation of over 900 Ethiopian nationals who had been victims of human trafficking and forced to work illegally in Thailand’s neighboring country. In addition, both sides also reviewed pending bilateral agreements and agreed to expedite the conclusion of political consultations agreement between both Ministries of Foreign Affairs with an aim to convene the first meeting in 2026.
The Director-General also took the opportunity to inform the Ethiopian side about Thailand’s position on the Thailand - Cambodia border situation, reiterating Thailand’s adherence to the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian principles. Due to Cambodia’s indiscriminate attacks, resulting in civilian casualties and damages to public infrastructure including a hospital, Thailand is compelled to take proportionate and appropriate measures in self-defense, which is consistent with international law.
