On 25 July 2025, Ms. Sasirit Tangulrat, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, had a discussion with foreign Ambassadors in Addis Ababa, namely (1) H.E. Mr. Aung Min Oo, Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar; (2) H.E. Mr. Tsutomu Nakagawa, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Japan to the African Union; and (3) H.E. Mr. Faizal Chery Sidharta, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia, during her official visit to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.

The Director-General discussed and exchanged views with each Ambassador on trade, investment, and development cooperation opportunities with Ethiopia, as well as received inputs regarding Thailand’s consideration to re-open the Royal Thai Embassy in Addis Ababa, which was previously closed in 1981 due to the situation in Ethiopia at that time. At present, there are more than 119 Embassies and diplomatic representative offices in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, two of which are ASEAN countries: Indonesia and the Union of Myanmar.

The Director-General also informed the Ambassadors about Thailand’s position on the Thailand - Cambodia border situation, reiterating Thailand’s adherence to the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian principles. Due to Cambodia’s indiscriminate attacks, resulting in civilian casualties and damages to public infrastructure including a hospital, Thailand is compelled to take proportionate and appropriate measures in self-defense, which is consistent with international law.
