On 28 July 2025, Ms. Sasirit Tangulrat Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, together with H.E. Ms. Morakot Janemathukorn, Ambassador of Thailand to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia with residence in Republic of Kenya and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the African Union, and Lieutenant. Both sides exchanged views on fostering official engagement and enhancing development collaboration between Thailand and the African Union following the accreditation of the first ever Permanent Representative of Thailand to the African Union in June 2025. The Thai side expressed readiness to develop a trilateral development cooperation agreement between Thailand, the AU, and the AU’s member states, of which the focus would be on sharing Thailand’s best practices and expertise in key areas such as food security, public health, and agricultural technology. The Director-General proposed the establishment of a cooperation framework under the Banjul Formular that allows non-African Union member countries to engage and collaborate with the AU’s member states. She also invited AUC representatives to attend the second Thailand - Africa Development Forum (TDAF), scheduled to be held in September 2025.
The AUC Director-General welcomed Thailand’s initiatives and agreed to designate representatives to participate in the second TDAF with an anyicipation that this engagement and related activities will help identify potential areas of cooperation, paving ways towards the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between both sides on future collaborations.
